GIFTS Men’s Shelter is the only shelter in Rock County that provides shelter and services to homeless men.
Our community has a significant problem with homelessness. According to the 2014 Wisconsin Homeless Management Information System Report, 27,291 individuals in Wisconsin were homeless. Over 1,000 of these individuals were from our Rock County community.
There are common things associated with homelessness that many believe are the cause of homelessness. These include lack of affordable housing, governmental policies, welfare reform, poor economy, lack of employment opportunities, educational barriers, prejudice, criminal convictions and addiction. These are all pieces of the problem, however, there are usually other causes. IF it was a simple issue, then homelessness could be fixed by providing jobs, education, housing, and money.
It is important to acknowledge that complexities of coexisting problems makes it even more difficult for someone experiencing homelessness to ‘just pull themselves up’ and move forward. There must be holistic programming that can provide resources and home for these men in desperate need of help.
Our hurting neighbors are forgotten, ignored and unwanted by many. They are not forgotten or unwanted by GIFTS Men’s Shelter or by God.
Those people who are lost, lonely and broken must be given hope. They must hear the message that hope and healing are available through the GIFTS Men’s Shelter, and God has a plan to heal them and restore them. We must show love, grace and mercy to each person that enters our doors.
The solution must include rebuilding lives on a firm foundation by first addressing the root issues of homelessness and addiction and helping the person make a plan to overcome and have victory over their current circumstances. Each person is a unique creation of God and therefore requires and deserves their own individualized plan that addresses their specific needs. As a faith-based organization, GIFTS teaches and models healthy human and spiritual relationships in our holistic approach to provide for the needs of the whole person.
The mission of GIFTS Men’s Shelter is to show Christ’s love to homeless men in Rock County by advancing renewal and hope through a unified Christian effort. The lost and forgotten need to know that there is hope in spite of their addiction. There is hope after their divorce. There is hope after their bankruptcy. Compassion says they deserve an opportunity to improve their situation and GIFTS is here to help them along that journey.
