As my partner and I embark on a journey to build an earthsheltered home in one of the most beautiful spots in the world, (I’m a little biased here), we would like to share the experience with you. In August of 2006 we sold our home of 16 years in Toledo, Oregon and purchased nearly 18 acres of land (mostly beautiful wetlands) on the Yaquina River, 7 miles from the coastal town of Newport. The property was blessed with an abundant water supply (a rarity in these parts), utilities in, much of the road work done and the home site cleared and leveled. Jeff and I had been dreaming for years of finding property along the river and it was as if by chance that I happened to be the first person to drive by this property after the for sale sign went up and was the first one to call the owners and make an offer. When Jeff and I walked up to the home site and took in the spectacular view of the wetlands/slough below, the Yaquina River and two bald eagles flying at eye level in front of us, we knew we just had to make what ever sacrifices we could to buy this land. We now live in a travel trailer on the property and enjoy the beauty and quiet of this rural paradise. We are building an Earth Bermed house up on the home site and will share that experience as it unfolds. Active construction bagan in 2008. Most of the work has been done by Jeff and myself with occasional help from our wonderful friends. This has been a slow process as weather and finances allow. You can follow the progress on our Building Blog. I have spent years planning and designing various versions of a dream home and believe I have come up with the perfect complement for this land and our desires.
